Some September blues and whites

"Feeling Blue" is what we might say when we are in low spirits, sad or feeling melancholic: the blue devils, as George Coleman called them in his farce of 1798.

The colour blue, on the other hand, is cool and calm and often associated with inspiration and purity.  It is my favourite colour to have around the house.

So, when I found this sweet little sauce tureen at a market last week, I had to have it.

It is complete with saucer and cover and has no chips or cracks, although, I suspect that it may have started life with a small matching ladle.
It has the look of Victorian transfer-printed wares but I think it is less than 50 years old.

It will give the gravy a little more distinction on the dinner table.

  6. Lovely blue and white tureen! I used to love visiting the Spode Museum here in the city to see all the blue and white wares but unfortunately it and the factory are now closed. I'm sure you will enjoy using it:)

  7. Oh my goodness Anna, what a gorgeous sauce tureen. I would certainly have 'snapped it up' if I'd have found it ;o) As you know blue and white are my colours of choice.
I've looked up the backstamp for you, it is after 1940, but before 1950. Hope you can find a suitable ladle for it. Your table settings will certainly be enhanced when you use it.

  9. Hello Anna:
Your sauce tureen is most attractive. Such a pretty shapeand the blue and white is very eye-catching. It will grace any lunch or dinner table.

We are rather fond of Mason's Ironstone and would think that your tureen dates between 1940-1950. Marvellous that it is perfect but, more than likely, it would have had a matching spoon when new.

We are sure that you will enjoy using it and that it wll receive many compliments!!

You got a real oldy! Look here: http://www.replacements.com/webquote/MASVISB.htm
If this is the large tureen than you got a valuable piece of this wonderful china. We do have Mason's Chartreuse and I love this division of Wedgwood very much.
    Have a lovely week ahead.
    Love to you,

  21. Hi Anna,

It's Mason Ware and therefore highly collectible. I have several pieces of Mason ware and wouldn't dream of using them for fear of them getting chipped.
